Fire destroys mobile home
Family left homeless; damage to another house near $10,000

By Matthew Bieniek / Journal city editor
POSTED: March 6, 2009

MARLOWE - Fire destroyed one residence and severely damaged another Thursday off Garlic Lane in the Sportsman's Paradise area near the Potomac River.

A family of four was left homeless and referred by firefighters to the Red Cross, said Capt. Bill Sions of Bedington Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a mobile home fully engulfed in flames, and the fire jumped to a small house only about five feet from the trailer.

Bedington received the call about noon, Sions said, and firefighters were on the scene until 3 p.m.
A family of three adults and one child fled the mobile home and were outside when firefighters arrived. The mobile home was a total loss, and the family had no insurance, Sions said.
No one was injured in the fire, he said.

The small home nearby suffered about $10,000 in damage, but may turn out to be declared a total loss by the conclusion of the investigation, he said. Sions said he believed the house was occupied, but he was unsure how many residents lived in the house.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but no foul play is suspected, Sions said. He cautioned, however, that the investigation was not complete.

Other departments on the scene included Berkeley County Engine 90 and the Hedgesville and Williamsport, Md., fire departments. The Baker Heights Fire Department was on standby during the fire, Sions said.

The Red Cross and the family could not be reached for comment Thursday evening.
